Brgy. Ginebra completes fightback from 19 down to frustrate NLEX

Brgy. Ginebra returned to the win column via come-from-behind victory over NLEX, 83-75, Wednesday night in the elimination round of the PBA Season 47 Philippine Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The Gin Kings trailed by as much as 19 points, 58-39, early in the 3rd frame but were able to trim the deficit down to 5, 63-58, going into the 4th quarter. The crowd darlings then continued with the onslaught in the payoff period to win in convincing fashion and pick up their 3rd in 4 starts.

The much-needed victory came after the disappointing loss to Manila Clasico rival Magnolia last Sunday and before the monumental clash with the unbeaten San Miguel Beermen on Friday, June 24.

“I just felt we did a really good job of staying in the game and battling,” said head coach Tim Cone during the post-game presser.

“It gave us a chance. I struggled mentally in that first half trying to figure out what we can do. We made some pretty huge adjustments that we usually made and we ran stuff that we really don’t even practice. The guys did a great job of turning things around mentally,” he added.

Japeth Aguilar paced the reigning Governors’ Cup champs with 20 points on top of 7 rebounds, an assist and a steal plus 3 rejections in 29 minutes of action. Arvin Tolentino fired 17 including 12 from beyond the arc while Scottie Thompson added 15 points, 8 boards, 4 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks.
