Brgy. Ginebra def Rain or Shine, 120-92 [PBA S49 Comm’s Cup | Jan. 22, 2025]

In a display of unwavering determination and strategic execution, Barangay Ginebra overwhelmed Rain or Shine with a convincing 120-92 victory, climbing to sixth place in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup eliminations at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo on Wednesday night.

Justin Brownlee and his teammates orchestrated an impressive performance, dominating the contest from start to finish against a Rain or Shine squad that appeared unusually lackluster.

Adding to the drama, Terrafirma delivered a stunning 117-108 upset over TNT earlier in the day, which, combined with Ginebra’s 28-point drubbing of Rain or Shine, significantly altered the standings as the tournament heads into its final stretch.

Currently, Converge (8-3) and NorthPort (8-3) occupy the top spot, while TNT has slipped to fifth place at 6-3. Eastern (7-3) and Meralco (7-3) are tied for third, with Ginebra (7-4) swapping positions with Rain or Shine (6-4).

The race for the Top Two and the coveted twice-to-beat bonus in the quarterfinals remains fiercely competitive among the leading teams, as San Miguel Beer (4-6), Magnolia (4-6), and NLEX (4-6) engage in a heated battle for the eighth and final quarterfinal slot.

With this latest victory, Ginebra secured a confirmed spot in the postseason after the eliminations.

The Gin Kings now aim to finish their campaign with an 8-4 record in their final matchup against the Meralco Bolts. Securing this win will guarantee them at least a place in the best-of-three quarterfinals.

Following a setback against TNT in their previous outing, Ginebra rebounded spectacularly, dismantling Rain or Shine, with Brownlee leading the charge with an impressive stat line of 29 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists.

Scottie Thompson added significant support with 22 points alongside eight assists and six rebounds, while Troy Rosario and RJ Abarrientos each contributed 14 points. Japeth Aguilar rounded out the effort with 12 points and eight boards.

Despite shooting a commendable 48.4 percent from beyond the arc, the E-Painters struggled to find their rhythm overall, resulting in a seventh-place ranking with three losses in their last four games.

To avoid finishing seventh and facing a twice-to-beat disadvantage in the quarterfinals, Rain or Shine must sweep their final two games.
