Brgy. Ginebra rookie Ken Holmqvist to carry mother’s surname Sagulo
Brgy. Ginebra rookie Ken Holmqvist will be known as Ken Sagulo in the PBA.
Gin Kings head coach Tim Cone bared that the 6-foot-8 Fil-Norwegian will carry his mother’s surname Sagulo instead of his father’s in the pro league. He used ‘Holmqvist’ during his college days with Far Eastern University in the UAAP.
“He told me that he doesn’t want to be known as Ken Holmqvist. He’d rather be known as Ken Sagulo which is his mother’s maiden name,” said Cone during an interview with The Chasedown.
“He claims he didn’t knew his father very well and his mother was the one who raised him and he is the one who is close to her. He would like to be known from his mother’s name rather than his father’s name,” he added.
The former national team mentor explained that the move is similar to what Jayson Castro is doing. The TNT star guard uses the surname William during FIBA-sanctioned tournaments.
A request to switch surnames, as per Cone, has already been submitted to the league office for approval.
“We talked to the PBA about putting his name on the back of his jersey kinda like what Jayson Castro does. It’s kinda the same thing with Ken. But there are some procedurals that we have to go through in terms of paper work that we have to submit to the PBA before it can get done. But that’s his intention at some point,” said the league’s most successful bench tactician.
