Brgy. Ginebra submits offer sheet, retains rights to Greg Slaughter

Brgy. Ginebra is keeping the rights to Greg Slaughter after the Tim Cone-mentored squad submitted an offer sheet for the disgruntled center.

Under league rules, a player becomes an unrestricted free agent if his mother team fails to offer him a new contract one month after the old one expires.

The 31-year old Slaughter earlier bared that he wasn’t offered a renewal after his contract expired last January, which eventually led to his decision to take an indefinite leave from the team.

“I never received any contract offer. It’s unfair to say I made demands when there was no offer. I was never aware of any trade,” wrote Slaughter on his Twitter account.

San Miguel Corp. Sports Director Alfrancis Chua, however, insisted that there was actually an offer on the table but neither Slaughter nor his agent bothered to talk to him with regards to the new deal.

“Ang daming nagsasabi, we didn’t offer a contract. Alam niyo, sa basketball, PBA or sa corporate, kapag expired ang contract mo, ikaw ang lalapit sa team. You are going to ask, expired na ako, baka puwede akong mag-renew. Hindi kami ang lalapit para tanungin kung irerenew ka namin,” explained Chua.

Aside from the absence of an offer sheet, persistent trade rumors and constant criticisms on social media were believed to be the main reasons behind Slaughter’s decision to temporarily step away from the spotlight.
