Brgy. Ginebra repulsed Rain or Shine’s repeated comeback attempts and pulled off a 90-85 victory in the elimination round of the PBA Season 47 Philippine Cup, Wednesday night at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The Gin Kings led by as many as 21 points but had to fend off several rallies by the Elasto Painters to pick up their second win in two starts while dealing the Chris Gavina-mentored squad their second consecutive defeat after an opening day win over Converge.
Japeth Aguilar paced the reigning Governors’ Cup champs with 23 points to go with 7 rebounds, an assist and 2 rejections in 37 minutes of action.
“I just thought that honestly, we were playing the swings of the game. We’d get up to a big lead, and then we’d soften up a little bit, and they’d come back. We gotta clean that up,” said Brgy. Ginebra head coach Tim Cone during the post-game presser.
“We played Rain or Shine who has a lot of young guards, and who played without their star, and so, we should have dictated the game a little bit better than we did. Obviously, we’re happy that we did,” he added.
Season 46 Most Valuable Player Scottie Thompson contributed 16 points, 6 boards, 8 dimes and 2 blocks while Christian Standhardinger and Arvin Tolentino chipped in 13 and 11 markers, respectively. LA Tenorio and Stanley Pringle added 9 points apiece.
Mike Nieto led the charge for Rain or Shine with 15 points while veteran big man Beau Belga added 14 points and 10 rebounds. Andrei Caracut finished with 12 markers while rookie Gian Mamuyac had 10.
The Gin Kings take a 3-day break before plunging back into action on Sunday, June 19, against the Magnolia Hotshots.
