NLEX def Brgy. Ginebra, 103-99 [PBA S49 Govs’ Cup | Sep. 22 | 7:30pm | Smart Araneta]

While NLEX finds itself in a commanding position ahead of Blackwater in the race for the final quarterfinals spot, the Road Warriors are leaving nothing to chance as they gear up for a high-stakes showdown against the Barangay Ginebra Kings in the PBA Season 49 Governors’ Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Sunday, September 22.

With the Bossing keeping pace with the Road Warriors after a decisive victory over the import-less San Miguel Beermen, NLEX now recognizes that only a win against the Kings in their 7:30 p.m. clash will secure their place in the quarters, eliminating any lingering uncertainties.

The Road Warriors (4-5) exerted added pressure on the Bossing (3-5) after their impressive 104-79 win over the Phoenix Fuel Masters on Friday, September 20. A Blackwater loss against Rain or Shine, combined with another NLEX victory, would cement their playoff berth. In the event of a tie, NLEX enjoys a favorable edge with a +6 point differential.

Nevertheless, head coach Jong Uichico is anything but complacent.

With a quarterfinals berth on the line, Robert Bolick and import DeQuan Jones are expected to spearhead the team’s efforts, particularly against a formidable Ginebra squad heading into the playoffs.

The game also holds significance for the Kings, as their final standing in the Top 4 and subsequent quarterfinals matchups remain undecided.

Ginebra could potentially drop to third in Group B, which would set up a challenging encounter with Meralco from Group A. Securing a first or second-place finish, on the other hand, could lead them to a showdown with either Magnolia or Converge.
