David Murrell now free to join Brgy. Ginebra as non-SMC teams show no interest

Magnolia free-agent David Murrell is now eligible to sign with Brgy. Ginebra after the deadline for other PBA teams to sign him passed at the close of office hours on Tuesday.

Following league regulations regarding sister teams, the PBA Commissioner’s Office circulated a memo to the nine non-SMC squads about the Gin Kngs’ interest in acquiring the reigning slam dunk champion, who was released by Magnolia and became an unrestricted free agent.

The Commissioner’s Office granted the other PBA teams a five-day window, ending at the end of office hours on Tuesday, to indicate if they intended to sign Murrell, which would have voided Brgy. Ginebra’s plans.

PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial confirmed on Wednesday that none of the teams showed interest in signing Murrell, automatically granting Ginebra the rights to his contract.

Murrell’s impending move to the league’s most popular quintet marks the first step in Coach Tim Cone’s efforts to address gaps in his lineup due to injuries sidelining key players like Jamie Malonzo, Aljon Mariano, and Jeremiah Gray.

Cone mentioned that the Gin Kings, who have a game scheduled against Converge in Cagayan de Oro on Saturday, are still on the lookout for another player, possibly from the free-agent pool or the MPBL.

After a lackluster rookie season at NLEX followed by a stint at Converge that lost momentum under a coaching change, Murrell now has the opportunity to reignite his professional basketball career with Ginebra.

His stint with the Hotshots was brief, with limited playing time before being moved to the unrestricted free agent list to make room for new acquisition Jerrick Balanza who was also acquired from the FiberXers via trade.
