Dyip pull off rare victory over Gin Kings
Terrafirma pulled off a stunning upset on Sunday night, securing a crucial victory over Brgy. Ginebra with a final score of 91-85. This win marks a significant milestone for the team, bringing them one step closer to a coveted spot in the quarterfinals of the PBA Philippine Cup.
Led by Juami Tiongson, Javi Gomez De Liano, and Stephen Holt, the Dyip showcased their strength and determination on the court, propelling them to fourth place with a record of 4-3.
In a surprising turn of events, the Dyip managed to outplay the Gin Kings, relegating them to 3-3 and a three-way tie for fifth place. This victory was only the second time in 23 meetings that the Dyip have emerged triumphant against the crowd darlings since joining the league in 2014.
Tiongson led the scoring for Terrafirma with an impressive 25 points, supported by Gomez De Liano’s career-high 22 points and Holt’s well-rounded performance of 12 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists.
Kemark Carino and Isaac Go also made valuable contributions to the team’s success, with Carino sinking two three-pointers and finishing with 12 points, while Go added nine points, seven rebounds, and three assists.
“It was a collective effort,” said Gomez De Liano, who was adjudged as the Best Player of the Game.
“Historically, bumibigay sa second half. In this game, we made sure, whoever are there on the floor, to make an impact and get the head start,” he added.
Throughout the game, Terrafirma maintained their momentum, building double-digit leads in the second half and ultimately securing a comfortable victory. Despite Christian Standhardinger’s efforts to lead the Gin Kings with 21 points, the Dyip’s resilience proved to be too much for Brgy. Ginebra to overcome.
Coach Johnedel Cardel’s strategic leadership has propelled the team to their fourth win of the conference, tying their record for most wins under his guidance. Looking ahead, Cardel and his team are focused on securing two more victories in their remaining four games to solidify their spot in the playoffs.
