Gin Kings fall to Road Warriors in final elims game

After several unsuccessful attempts, the NLEX Road Warriors finally clinched a spot in the quarterfinals in their last opportunity, securing a hard-fought 76-72 victory over the Barangay Ginebra Kings at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Despite a tense final quarter where they went scoreless for a long stretch, the Road Warriors managed to capitalize on a crucial error by Ginebra in the closing seconds to advance as the sixth seed in the PBA Philippine Cup playoffs.

Coach Frankie Lim’s team avoided a do-or-die game for the final playoff berth and instead earned a spot in a best-of-three quarterfinal series against the Meralco Bolts. Ginebra, even with the loss, finished in second place behind San Miguel at the end of the single-round elimination round.

With the victory, NLEX joined a five-way tie at 6-5 with Meralco, TNT, Rain or Shine, and Magnolia. Following the application of the quotient tiebreak, the Bolts, Tropang Giga, Elasto Painters, Road Warriors, and Hotshots were seeded accordingly.

Meanwhile, NorthPort and Terrafirma, both at 5-6, are set to compete in a knockout match to determine the eighth seed, which will face top-seed San Miguel in the quarterfinals. The other matchups include Ginebra with a twice-to-beat advantage against Magnolia, Meralco versus NLEX in a best-of-three series, and TNT facing Rain or Shine in another best-of-three showdown.

Despite struggling to score in the final minutes, the Road Warriors managed to hold off the Kings’ comeback efforts, with Robert Bolick leading the charge with 25 points, eight assists, and six rebounds. Richie Rodger also contributed with 11 points, six rebounds, and two assists, helping NLEX secure the victory.

Ginebra’s Christian Standhardinger delivered a solid performance with 19 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists, despite missing crucial moments late in the game. Japeth Aguilar and Maverick Ahanmisi added 15 and 14 points, respectively, for the Kings in a hard-fought contest that ultimately favored the Road Warriors.
