Gin Kings pound Fuel Masters, improve to 2-0

Brgy. Ginebra secured its second straight win in the PBA Season 48 Philippine Cup by defeating Phoenix, 102-92, Sunday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

The Gin Kings used a dominant third quarter to break open what had been a tight game, building a sizeable lead that withstood the Fuel Masters’ final push.

Five Brgy. Ginebra players scored in double figures, led by Jamie Malonzo’s 17 points and 10 rebounds. Rookie Ralph Cu added 12 points, hitting four three-pointers.

After leading 47-43 at halftime, the crowd darlings outscored Phoenix 32-19 in the third quarter. The Gin Kings sank seven three-pointers in the period, with Cu making three of them.

Brgy. Ginebra led by as much as 19 points, 96-77 in the fourth quarter after a jumper by Stanley Pringle.

“We started hitting shots in transition and something we’re trying to do a little bit more. We’re trying to play a bit more uptempo and look for shots like that. We got the shooters to allow them to do that,” said Gin Kings’ head coach Tim Cone during the post-game presser.

Cone acknowledged that they were faced a Phoenix team without its chief point guard Tyler Tio.

“What really helped us out is that Tyler Tio didn’t play today. They’re a different team without Tyler. He keeps everything under control. I think that was a big advantage throughout the whole game. I think Tyler would have made a difference,” said the concurrent Gilas Pilipinas mentor.

The Gin Kings played its second straight game without main man Scottie Thompson who is still nursing a back injury..

Jason Perkins topped Phoenix with 14 points, while Javee Mocon added 13. Sean Manganti and Ken Tuffin contributed 11 and 10 markers, respectively.

Phoenix committed 17 turnovers which led to 21 Brgy. Ginebra points and converted only 10 of 30 three-point attempts.

The loss dropped the Fuel Masters to 0-2 to start the conference.
