Greg Slaughter set to rejoin Brgy. Ginebra once practices start, says Tim Cone

Greg Slaughter’s return to Brgy. Ginebra is about to be formalized once practices start.

The 7-foot center, who according to head coach Tim Cone has already signed a new contract with the defending Philippine Cup champions, will rejoin the team after a one-year hiatus when the Gin Kings resume their training sessions in a few weeks time

“He’ll return to the team when we resume official practices which is still a couple of weeks away,” said Cone during in interview with the Inquirer.

The league’s winningest mentor broke the news regarding Slaughter’s signing on Twitter.

“No answers yet, except that Greg is signed,” replied Cone to a user who inquired about the team’s plans in the upcoming draft and the status of the top overall pick in the 2013 draft.

Slaughter left the country shortly after the crowd darlings captured the 2019 Governors’ Cup crown. He posted a farewell message on Instagram and announced his decision to take a break and work on improving ‘all aspects’ of himself. The former Ateneo big man also claimed that he wasn’t offered a contract renewal which was later on denied by SMC sports director Alfrancis Chua.

While in the US, Slaughter signed a contract with BeoBasket and was reportedly thinking of trying his luck in the NBA G League.

The 2014 Rookie of the Year, however, returned to the country in October of 2020 to attend to some personal matters. Afterwards, he took care of career issues by publicly apologizing to team management, particularly to SMC big boss Ramon Ang and Chua, for the ‘miscommunication and misunderstanding’.

The act of humility served him well as it resulted in a meeting with Chua and eventually a new contract.
