Joe Devance signs one-year extension, leaves for Germany for stem cell treatment

Joe Devance renewed his commitment with Brgy. Ginebra after agreeing to a one-year contract extension last Friday.

“I just signed a new contract,” bared the 38-year old Fil-Am who was born in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The one-year deal was the shortest of his PBA career for the 1st overall pick of the 2007 draft but was a critical move for the team following the shocking decision of Greg Slaughter to take an indefinite leave from playing in the league in order to focus on improving his craft.

The signing of the 10-time PBA champion came after the team extended fellow big man Prince Caperal’s contract for another season. The two, along with 2019 Governors’ Cup Finals MVP Japeth Aguilar, will comprise the Gin Kings’ frontline for the upcoming season.

While Slaughter’s loss will definitely be felt down low, Devance says the team will make up for it with quickness.

“I wish Greg the best. But at the end of the day, we just can’t be like, ‘man we wish Greg is here with us.’ We just got to move on. At the end of the day, we have to win and we have to get better,” said Devance.

“We might not be as big, but what we lack in size we just have to make it up with quickness,” he added.

Devance, however, is set to undergo stem cell procedure in Germany in order to treat his nagging foot and knee injuries and is expected to miss the first three weeks of the upcoming 2020 Philippine Cup.

“It’s just reality. I take pain relievers every day just to practice. So I’m really, really excited at the thought of the steam cell thing working for me,” he claimed.

“I’m getting four shots, and I have to sit out two to three weeks after,” added the Tim Cone protege.
