LA Tenorio sets sights on Grand Slam after winning first PBA Philippine Cup title
LA Tenorio finally won an All-Filipino conference title after 14 long years of playing in the PBA.
In addition, the 4th overall pick of the 2006 draft was named as the Finals MVP after leading Brgy. Ginebra to a 4-1 conquest of TNT in the 2020 Philippine Cup. It was his fourth after getting the same recognition in the 2010 Commissioner’s Cup (with Alaska), and during the Gin Kings’ 2016 and 2017 Governors’ Cup romp.
With 6 PBA titles already tucked under his belt, the 36-year old Tenorio is now setting his sights on a Grand Slam – a rare jewel he believes is within reach especially since a 2-time triple crown winner is calling the shots for the team.
“Iniisip ko nga baka maka-grand slam din sana ‘yung Ginebra. ‘Yun ang naisip ko kasi ‘di ba every time na magha-handle siya (Tim Cone) ng isang franchise, nagga-grand slam,” explained Tenorio who won 5 of his 6 titles under the legendary mentor.
The Gin Kings, who welcomed Cone prior to the league’s 41st season, has now won 5 titles in the last 5 years. A testament to the coaching wizardry of the 63-year old American who is now a proud owner of 23 titles.
“The moment na in-appoint si coach Tim sa amin, alam ko na mananalo kami ng championships ‘di lang isa. Alam ko kasi kung papaano siya mag-handle ng team chemistry-wise and the moment na iniba niya ‘yung culture ng Ginebra, ginawa niyang balansyado ‘yung team,” said Tenorio.
“Kung tatanungin niyo ko what’s next? Lalaro pa rin ako. Sana grand slam naman. 36 now, next year 37. Bata pa.”
