Richard del Rosario defends decision to sit out Standhardinger, Pringle in the 4th

The decision to bench Christian Standhardinger in the fourth quarter of Brgy. Ginebra’s upset loss to Terrafirma was a strategic move by the coaching staff, according to lead assistant Richard Del Rosario.

The coaches opted to stick with a lineup consisting of LA Tenorio, Japeth Aguilar, Sidney Onwubere, Jamie Malonzo, and Maverick Ahanmisi, as they were the ones who were able to keep the team within striking distance.

Head coach Tim Cone entrusted Del Rosario to lead the team from the bench early in the second half when the Gin Kings were struggling against a determined Terrafirma squad.

“We stayed with those guys. Nothing against Christian, we just stayed with those guys. Christian was, you know, scoring, but yung mga guys na pinasok namin made the run,” explained Del Rosario.

Despite falling behind by 11 points in the final frame, the team fought back with Tenorio leading the charge, narrowing the gap to 81-75 with just over four minutes remaining.

However, the Dyip responded with key plays from Kiemark Carino and Juami Tiongson, extending their lead to 86-75 in the final minutes.

Standhardinger, who was the leading scorer for the crowd darlings with 21 points in three quarters, accepted the coaching staff’s decision to go with Aguilar and Onwubere in the crucial moments of the game.

“Sid and Jap, they played amazing. Coach Richard decided to go with Sidney and Japeth and they both had a great fourth quarter. It’s just unfortunate that we didn’t make it to the victory,” said the top overall pick of the 2017 draft.

Overall, the coaching strategy to bench Standhardinger in the fourth quarter was a calculated decision to maximize the team’s chances of mounting a comeback against the Dyip.

“Hindi lang naman si Christian yung hindi na naglaro, even Stanley di na rin naipasok,” said Del Rosario.

“But when you get lifts from guys off the bench, you have to reward them also kasi maganda yung pinakita nila. So we stuck with those guys sa stretch na yan,” he added.
