Scottie Thompson makes triumphant return for the Gin Kings

Making his long-awaited return to Brgy. Ginebra, former PBA Most Valuable Player Scottie Thompson wasted no time in leaving his mark on the court for the Gin Kings.

Despite missing the first six games of the PBA Season 48 Philippine Cup due to a back injury, Thompson had significant contributions in less than 27 minutes of gameplay on Friday, helping the crowd darlings secure a dominant 105-86 victory over the Blackwater Bossing.

While he may have only scored 4 points, Thompson’s performance was highlighted by his impressive 8 assists, 7 rebounds, 2 steals, and a remarkable +/- of 22, demonstrating his tremendous value on the team.

Brgy. Ginebra head coach Tim Cone expressed his confidence in Thompson’s ability to make an impact, citing his previous MVP accolade as a testament to his prowess on the court.

“He’s a former MVP. He’s going to make an impact on the team. He has, through the years,” said Cone during the post-game press conference.

The star guard’s playmaking abilities proved crucial for the Gin Kings, as evidenced by big man Christian Standhardinger’s career-best 33-point output.

“It helped that Scottie’s coming back. Me and Scottie have a good two-man game that helped me get going,” said the 34-year-old Fil-German. “I think Scottie and the whole team, we did a good job bouncing back.”

Amidst a season filled with ups and downs, the Gin Kings’ recent victory against Blackwater served as a much-needed morale boost following consecutive losses to San Miguel and Terrafirma.

Cone emphasized that the team’s success was a collective effort, with Thompson’s return playing a significant role in their triumph.

Looking ahead, the 4-3 Gin Kings are hoping to make it back-to-back as they face off against the NorthPort Batang Pier on Sunday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila at 6:15 p.m.
