The last time Ginebra started 4-0, the team went on to win the championship
Brgy. Ginebra is still undefeated inside the PBA bubble in Clark, Pampanga.
The Gin Kings kicked things off with a lopsided win over NLEX, slipped past Blackwater and then steamrolled over Meralco and Phoenix Super LPG.
With the exception of the game against the Elite, the country’s most popular squad won all their matches with plenty to spare.
Currently toting a 4-0 win-loss card, this is now Brgy. Ginebra’s best start in the Tim Cone-era.
In fact, the last time the team opened a conference with the same record they went all the way and won the championship. It happened during the 1986 Open Conference when the Gin Kings were bannered by super imports Billy Ray Bates and Michael Hackett and handled by the one and only Robert ‘The Big J’ Jaworski.
When informed of this trivia, Cone was delighted at the fact that the current batch of Ginebra players would now be mentioned in the same breath as their legendary counterparts.
“Wow, those are big names. Of course, the Big J, Billy Ray Bates, and Michael Hackett. It’s nice to be mentioned with those names. Those are incredible names,” said Cone.
“I’m glad to be part of that history,” he added.
That it took 34 long years before a 4-0 record could be matched is a testament to how difficult it is to start a campaign with a winning streak.
“It just goes to show how hard it is to get off to a 4-0 start in this league. It takes a lot of mental toughness to put a winning streak together in this league. Hopefully, we can continue it,” said Cone.
The Gin Kings try to make it 5-0 when they take on the struggling Magnolia Hotshots on Sunday, October 25 at the Smart 5G-powered Angeles University Foundation Sports Arena and Cultural Center in Angeles City, Pampanga.
