Tim Cone debunks ‘Sagip Kapamilya’ accusations: “I want to beat SMB more than anybody”
Brgy. Ginebra received a 15-point beating from San Miguel, Sunday night in the 2020 PBA Philippine Cup restart and fans of the most popular squad are up in arms over the apparently questionable loss to the Beermen who were on a two-game slide.
The Gin Kings, on the other hand, were riding the momentum of a three-game winning streak and a victory over the defending champions would’ve automatically clinched the top spot in the quarterfinal round of the compressed All-Filipino conference. It, however, didn’t materialize and the team absorbed its third defeat in ten outings.
Head coach Tim Cone admitted that he is aware of the conspiracy theories going around the PBA circles and assured the team’s supporters that the loss was simply due to fatigue.
“I assure you I want to beat San Miguel more than anybody. We just have dead legs tonight. We were 4-for-31 from three-point line. I don’t know what happened with TnT against us. We just have dead legs,” said Cone.
“The bottomline is I know some of the fans are going to be a little bit upset on us, but I’ve gotten used to that. But we’re just trying to think about the big picture here,” he added. “And the big picture is we’re trying to make a huge effort coming back to that game with our key players and then turn around and play KIA tomorrow and risk losing that game because we’re dead-tired. So it doesn’t make sense.”
The Gin Kings return to action the very next day to face an already eliminated Terra Firma squad in the main event of a triple-header. A victory would assure them of the number 1 spot in the next round.
