Tim Cone expects Greg Slaughter to be back for Brgy. Ginebra next conference
Greg Slaughter may not be available for Brgy. Ginebra during the 2020 PBA Philippine Cup restart in Clark, Pampanga but that won’t be the case next conference.
Gin Kings head coach Tim Cone admitted on former PBA commissioner Noli Eala’s show Power and Play that the 7-foot Fil-Am will back on the team’s roster for the upcoming season.
“I think they’ll work it out. I’m excited to have him back,” said Cone.
Slaughter left the country shortly after Brgy. Ginebra reclaimed the Governors’ Cup title last January and spent the next few months training in the US. He recently signed up with BeoBasket and was reportedly intent on playing abroad.
The top overall pick in the 2013 rookie draft, however, returned to the country and had a long-delayed meeting with team management.
Cone is extremely confident that a new contract would be worked out and admitted that he even tried to include Slaughter on the team’s roster for the PBA bubble.
“I know that he talked to our team manager. They cleared the air on some issues. I think they ironed out some issues and I think there’s gonna be more talks along the way,” said Cone.
“I tried hard to get him into this bubble, but he just had too many things going on that he couldn’t make it in time to get here. He needed to get here a couple of weeks before to really talk to management, settle things, get a contract then go in with us,” added the well-loved American mentor.
With the start of next season still uncertain due to pandemic, Cone is nonetheless excited to have his big man back.
“He had a lot of personal things going on, but I think he’s ready. He said he’s ready to play again, and I think we’ll see him next conference. I’m very confident of that and I’m excited to have him back.”
