As TNT and San Miguel have jumped the gun in rebuilding their core, Barangay Ginebra has no plan yet in revamping its current roster for the coming 2021 Governors’ Cup.

Recently, Ginebra acquired Sidney Onwubere from Northport to support the current lineup as head coach Tim Cone is acquainted with the need for his team to get younger, but he said that the rest of his players can still play at their best and have a lot to offer in their future stints in PBA.

“It’s a concern because guys are starting to play beyond their prime. Prime is really anywhere between 29 and 32. It used to be, but with the way people take care of their bodies these days, there’s an extension now. They can play at a high level in their 35, 36, 37. But after that, no doubt you start to dip and your role has to change in the team,” said Cone in the Power and Play program.

“I think the organization is aware of that. Management is aware of that and they are looking for solutions. That’s why they brought in Sidney. Someone who can give us fresh legs and someone who is entering his prime.”

Some of its crew are aging.

The likes of Japeth Aguilar, LA Tenorio and Stanley Pringle are in their mid-thirties. Mark Caguioa, one of the most seasoned players in the squad is now 40. The rest are beyond their prime like Jeff Chan (38), Joe Devance (39), and Jared Dilinger, 37.

The two-time grand slam coach is well aware of the current status of his team – its core is not getting any younger – but he said that it won’t be easy to make changes now.

“That’s something that our management is aware of and we are looking for avenues to do that. But we feel like LA still has a lot to give. We feel that Japeth and Stanley have a lot to give. So we are not pushing the panic button yet. There’s a realization that needs to be done. But it’s not just a snap of a finger and do it,” said the multi-titled mentor.
