WATCH: Justin Brownlee always ready to suit up for Brgy. Ginebra!
Brgy. Ginebra reasserted its mastery over Meralco in the PBA Governors’ Cup by sweeping the last three games of the best-of-seven championship series to repeat as champions of the season-ending conference, Friday night inside a jampacked MOA Arena in Pasay City.
A 103-92 victory in Game 6 with 20,224 fans in attendance sealed the deal for the Gin Kings with a 4-2 series win and kept the Bolts winless in 4 Finals clashes.
The crowd darlings, behind the sterling performances of LA Tenorio, Justin Brownlee, Christian Standhardinger and Scottie Thompson, have now won four of the last five editions of the Governors’ Cup. Head coach Tim Cone, meanwhile, captured his 10th Governors’ Cup title and 24th overall.
“It’s a little bit shocking at this point for us because we were so far down at one point. I mean, we had really reached the bottom of the barrel,” said Cone.
“And, there was a point where I didn’t think we were gonna emerge and make a statement this conference. But again, we have a very veteran team. We have great veteran leadership, and the leadership really stepped up,” he added.
Tenorio finished with a game-high 30 points to go with 4 boards and 4 assists. Brownlee added 24 points, 16 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks in 47 minutes of play.
Standhardinger contributed 19 points and 13 rebounds while Thompson, who was hailed as the Finals NVP, chipped in 15 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.
