Brgy. Ginebra put the lock on the third spot while keeping the possibility of sneaking into second with a 115-96 drubbing of Converge in the penultimate play date of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the PhilSports Arena Wednesday.
With a balanced game from their core rotation, the Gin Kings topped the FiberXers in a virtual playoff for third, finishing at 9-3 as against the latter’s 8-4 mark.
Then there’s still that window of opportunity for Ginebra to snatch second place and the crucial twice-to-beat incentive in the quarterfinals.
But that will only happen should Rain or Shine (5-6) beat Magnolia (9-2) in the final game of the single-round-robin elims Friday in the same playing venue.
Otherwise, the Hotshots will be the second seed behind the top-seeded Bay Area Dragons, enjoying the win-once bonus against the two lowest seeds in the quarterfinals. In this scenario, the Kings will be relegated to a best-of-three quarterfinals showdown versus the sixth seed.
“We’re No. 2 or No. 3. (Rain or Shine) coach Yeng (Guiao) may pull of something on Friday, and we will be cheering for them,” said Ginebra coach Tim Cone.
Ginebra did its part of the deal.
