Brgy. Ginebra seized victory in the opening game of their best-of-five quarterfinals series against Meralco, triumphing 99-92 on Thursday during the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Justin Brownlee showcased an impressive performance, scoring 29 points alongside 12 rebounds, seven assists, and three steals, leading the Gin Kings to an early advantage in their renewed rivalry with the Bolts.
Support came from Scottie Thompson, Japeth Aguilar, rookie RJ Abarrientos, and the newly acquired Stephen Holt, who all made significant contributions to third-seeded Ginebra’s success against the No. 2 seed Meralco.
The Gin Kings established a commanding 15-point lead, 66-51, in the third quarter and managed to maintain their advantage despite a late-game surge from the Bolts.
Meralco narrowed the gap to 84-83, but Ginebra quickly responded with an 11-2 run, highlighted by a crucial three-pointer from RJ Abarrientos with just 2:51 remaining.
Thompson complemented Brownlee’s effort with 19 points, five rebounds, and five assists, while Holt added 14 points and five rebounds to the mix.
Notably, Joe Devance made his return from retirement, contributing two points in just over six minutes of play.
For the Bolts, Cliff Hodge led the charge with 23 points and five rebounds, while Chris Newsome and Allen Durham chipped in with 20 points and 17 points, respectively, the latter also grabbing 13 rebounds.
Game Two is set for Saturday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
