Brgy. Ginebra started slow and allowed Terrafirma to dictate the tempo in the opening round but came out energized after the halftime break and dealt the Dyip their seventh straight defeat, 106-82, Wednesday night in the elimination round of the PBA Season 47 Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

The veteran duo of Japeth Aguilar and LA Tenorio starred for the Gin Kings who blew a 12-point lead early in the 2nd and trailed by as much as 8 in the 3rd. The Dyip’s uprising, however, was short-lived as the crowd darlings unleashed a crippling 22-1 run during the last two quarters to completely turn the game around and win with plenty to spare.

Aguilar paced Richard del Rosario-mentored squad with 22 points on a sizzling 9-of-11 shooting from the field to go with 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 7 rejections in 28 minutes of play.

Brgy. Ginebr picked up their 6th win in 7 starts which is good for a tie for first place with idle San Miguel while Terrafirma stayed winless in 7 outings.

“Our character showed in the second half. We played out of character in the first,” said del Rosario who called the shots in lieu of Tim Cone who’s still with the Miami Heat in the NBA Summer League.

“Mga hustle stats, talo talaga kami. You can see the energy of Terrafirma. Parang nothing to lose for them and everything to gain. Sa amin naman, this was really an important game as we can’t afford to slip in the standings,” he added.

“We wanted to really share the basketball. In the first half, we’re playing selfish. Everybody wanted to score. Tsaka nag-focus kami sa scoring than stops. Yun ang naging problema. Buti na lang natauhan lahat.”

Christian Standhardinger backstopped his frontcourt buddy with 18 points, 10 boards, 7 dimes and a steal while Arvin Tolentino added 13 points and 6 rebounds.

Tenorio finished with 12 markers and 6 assists while Scottie Thompson led the team in rebounds with 12 in addition to 7 points, 6 assists, a steal and a block.

The Gin Kings shoot for win number 7 and their 5th consecutive when they tangle with the streaking TNT Tropang Giga on Sunday, July 10, 6:30pm at the same venue.
