Sidney Onwubere ruled out for remainder of 2021 Governors’ Cup

New Brgy. Ginebra recruit Sidney Onwubere has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2021 PBA Governors’ Cup.

The 28-year old Fil-Nigerian, who was acquired by the Gin Kings late last year for the perennially injured Arthur dela Cruz, suffered a major ankle sprain during the team’s Christmas day game against Magnolia and was placed on the injured list.

Head coach Tim Cone bared that the former Emilio Aguinaldo College standout could be out for at least six weeks.

“Sidney’s out probably for the conference. Sayang we got him, but he suffered a high ankle sprain,” said the amiable American mentor.

“So he’s now probably be out for six weeks or more.”

Prior to going down with the injury, the 8th overall pick of the 2017 draft suited up in all four games and submitted decent averages of 4.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.0 assist in 14.5 minutes of action.

Aside from Onwubere, also unavailable for the crowd darlings are Stanley Pringle, Aljon Mariano, Joe Devance, Jared Dillinger and Mark Caguioa.

After a string of injuries and losses, Cone admits that they’ll just have to roll with the punches and play with whoever is capable.

“This ain’t going to be a long conference because the games are going to come quick,” said Cone. “Two weeks is a long time in this conference, so basically, we’re gonna go with who we have.”
